Ligamentous Injury of the Knee

Abstract
This present study is concerned with clinical analysis of ligamentous injuries of the knee treated with operation on the basis of a follow-up 28 patients (33 knees) from 8 months to 5 years after the surgery.
Causes, types and severity of the injuries, associated injuries, X-ray of the knee with a varus or
valgus stress, duration from injury to surgery were studied from November 1965 to July 1972(for 6 years and 8 months) at the department of orthopedic surgery of Severance Hospital, Korea.
In roentgenogram of the injured knee, more than 10 degrees of varus and valgus angles and 1 cm in distance between articular surfaces of both condyles of the tibia and femur as compared with the normal knee was considered indication for operation.
The results are as follows.
1. The most common cause of injuries was car accident and men in the active age group were most frequent.
2. Multiligamentous injuries were more frequent than monoligamentous ones and injuries of medial side structure of knees were the most common.
3. Roentgenograms of the injured knee were made with the joint slightly flexed while a varus or valgus force is exerted upon it and the angle and distance of separation of the joint surfaces were measured.
More separation appeared in multiligamentous injuries than monoligamentous one.
4. In 33 ligamentous injuries, 18 cases were operated uneder 2 weeks after trauma, 5 cases from 2 weeks to 3 months and 5 cases over 3 months.
Excellent to good results were more often obtained in recent injuries than in old ligamentous ones.
